The tree leaned down
and said to me,
"The sun's quite bright today.
How about you sit in shade?"
The grass looked up
and said to me,
"Your feet seem quite tired.
How about you sit awhile?"
The breeze whispered
into my ear,
"It is quite hot just now.
How about I cool your face?"
Thank you, tall tree.
Thank you, soft grass.
Thank you, sweet breeze.
Same time tomorrow?
Started for National Poetry Writing Month 2011, decided to keep things going. I've always liked writing poetry.

Quinzaine
Thought I'd play around with a new form today. So here are a couple quinzaines.
Quinzaine : The name comes from the French word meaning 15, quinze, describing the total number of syllables. There are three lines with 7/5/3 syllables. The first line is a statement, followed by two questions.
The palm leaves move with the wind.
How many are there?
How much wind?
Father has gone to the store.
When will he return?
What's for sale?
Grandma made yummy cookies.
How many for me?
Just one left!?

Quiet
Early morning, not ready to stir.
Others, still in bed, breathe softly.
The fan moves air along the walls.
Birds make calls to one another.
Leaves rustle in a soft breeze.
Bugs vibrate in search of mates.
Even in the morning's stillness,
Life is sound.
So I wrote yesterday, but I forgot to post. Ah well, at least I'm still writing during my vacation if not quite keeping up with posts.

Autumn Air
Crisp,
Brisk,
Invigorating.
My nose is cold from the breeze.
My body is warm from the sun
and long sleeves.
Warm yet chilled is how a day in
autumn feels.
I love that feeling! It's such a special sensation.

Gravity Gave Up On Me
Earlier this morning,
I fell into the sky.
It started without warning,
and I can't figure why
gravity
gave up on me.
I swerved around a tree limb
and nearly hit a bird.
Clouds were all around me
when suddenly I heard,
"Hey there, you!
You're floating too?!"
Just as I came to a stop,
I saw a smiling face.
"We're kids gravity forgot.
You'll get used to this place.
My name's Sly,
let's share this sky."
And so I settled in
to live atop the clouds.
The air is a bit thin,
but at least it isn't loud.
Gravity
gave up on me.
Inspired by Shel Silverstein's "Falling Up".
A new book of his poems came out recently, and I'm excited to read it!

No Railing
No railing. Saw her slipping.
Suddenly, she fell through.
I'll never again feel my
lover's delicate fingers.
Slipping on the mossy stairs,
through the air she tumbled.
My darling took her last breath,
fingers grasping only air.

Flying Umbrella
Woah!
Mommy, look at that!
Is that an umbrella?!
Yeah, it is.
Huh.
Flipping, twirling, spinning
in the air.
Held up like a kite,
but wihout a string.
It has a no direction,
flits around
in the air
above the building.
Blue over blue,
handle over canopy,
up on a draft,
down after a tilt.
Twisting, turning, flying
out of sight.
Is that an umbrella?!
Yeah, it is.
Cool.
At a Mustang car show I attended recently with my dad, just as we were starting to leave, a little kid noticed an umbrella up in the air. So, a few of us watched it tumble around for a while until it disappeared behind a building. I wrote the poem for it later that day. It was a magical little moment reminding me of the wonder of childhood and the magic to be found in everyday life.

Smoke
Curling into tendrils,
Making complex yet simple shapes.
Wafting in my direction,
Drifting along with the air,
Diffusing through the air.
Suffusing the air with its
Simple, sweet smell.

Day 4 Springtime Walk of Elements
Springtime Walk of Elements
Today, I went for a walk with my dog.
The wind blew through, against, between the trees
making quite a ruckus, but a pleasant one.
Dandelions everywhere.
Clover patches abound.
Feeling the ground beneath my feet,
the wind in my face,
the sun on my skin,
the humidity in my pores,
I am connected to the ground,
the wind,
the sun,
the humidity:
the Earth.
