The Apostrophe Question

I always wonder where the apostrophe should go: inside the word or next to it.

Inside implies one mother.
Perhaps it means “motherhood’s day”
(but that didn't fit as nicely on the sign).
Maybe it means a more personal mother:
the day to remember and honor your specific mother.

But, everyone has more than one mother.
On a biological note, all mothers have mothers;
it’s mothers all the way down.

Then there are the surrogates:
teachers, friends, spiritual leaders, aunts.
Anyone that helps a person grow.

Outside makes it plural possessive.
The day of many mothers,
the day of any and all mothers,
the day of celebrating nurturing itself,
and Mother Nature itself
(another mother we all have).

These days, I wonder where I should go: inside the group or next to it.

I am between maiden and mother spiritually.
I am fairly old or still quite young,
depending on culture, time, and personal opinion.

I did not yet feel motherly or mom-like
(more like a still-developing proto-mom)
when I experienced miscarriage.

I don’t much feel like I lost a child,
more like a particular vision of the future --
a (now alternate) reality to which I’d become accustomed,
and of which I was growing quite fond.

But I wanted it,
I was preparing for it,
and I had (nearly) accepted it as part of my identity.

I’m caught between alternate versions of being.

The apostrophe and me - in or out?

The answer feels ambiguous at best.

Because I wonder about this every time I type Mother's Day, I have researched it. Officially, the apostrophe goes before the s. Here’s the brief wikipedia explanation.

Connected

Energy flows through every cell
of every body.

My joy is contagious.
My excitement,
my energy,
my desire to help
and to affect change
can all be felt
if you just stand near me.

Feel the love,
the peace,
the hope.

Open your body
to the vibrations.
Open your heart
to the emotions.
Open your mind
to the new notions.

Energy flows through every cell
of every body.
Feel it.

I went to an organizational meeting tonight for Occupy Raleigh.

Occupy Wall Street is a beautiful movement gathering some awesome power and amazingly positive energy for change. The movement is spreading in the form of protests and marches happening across the country and the world. Look up your town or city and you'll probably find something nearby related to the Occupation. Check Facebook and Twitter for #Occupy and there is tons to see. The amazing energy this evening really moved me.

Today's service at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh (where I attend somewhat regularly) featured humanity's ability to share emotions and energy through proximity and movement.

Today's poem is perfect for the day I had!

Coping

This poem was featured as a guest post at The Wounded Warrior on 31st August, 2011. It's a great blog with some good poetry and some writing about being a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. I wanted to give the poem another chance for reading and make it a little easier to find, so here it is:

When stress is high
or bad times arise,
we all have our ways
to get through the day.

Some of us laugh,
pray the moment will pass.
Some turn to drink,
bottle's gone in a blink.

Some of us cry,
and then wonder "why?"
Some of us scream,
hope it's all a dream.

Some of us smoke,
find peace in a toke.
Some meditate,
deep breathe it away.

Some of us lie,
smile, say "I'm fine."
Some need a hug,
show a little love.

So we can survive,
we cope with our lives.

Inspired by lyrics from Starsailor's "Some Of Us"
"Some of us laugh
some of us cry
some of us smoke
some of us lie
but it's all just the way
that we cope with our lives"
You can hear it here.

Coping: Guest Post on The Wounded Warrior

Jan Metal Man allowed me to do a guest post for him today on his blog, The Wounded Warrior! I enjoy his poetry. He also writes about being a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. From his blog description, "This is my place to offload, share and let go. Have a seat, kick off your shoes and join me. Leave your prejudices at the door, open your mind and learn." Take a look at his page, maybe enjoy some of his poetry, and let him know you've visited by leaving some comments (perhaps on my poem).

Dream Dancing

Down into a
deep sleep in the
dark of night.

Daily doings forgotten:
door hinge creaking,
dripping faucet,
dumb jokes,
dog's mess.

Desires revealed:

Dropped into
drums beating a
delightful rhythm.
Drinks all around.
Dancing begins.
Deemed worthy, I
dance with them.

Dipping in the ocean.
Daring to
dive for
dollars of sand.

Dawn arrives,
drawing me awake.
Dear, sweet dreams,
done for now.
Don't forget me.

Alter Perception

Alter perception
if fond of tranquility.
Then find inner peace.

Three Word Wednesday CCXLIV
Alter, Fond, Tranquil

At first I had something more complicated in mind, but then this haiku suddenly appeared. It's much better.

A Sweet Kiss?

What if you could tell
from a kiss
if two people were compatible?

A small drop of liquid on the tongue,
a brief kiss,
then an answer

A sweet taste would mean yes.
No taste would mean nothing special.
A bitter taste would mean trouble.

Would you want to know right from the outset?
Would you kiss everyone you met?
Or, only the most attractive, hoping you'd be lucky?

Would you want to make a go of 'nothing special'?
Can one kiss give two results?
Would commitment happen sooner?

Could someone determine sexual preference
by kissing a few people?
Could you fake it?

Idea inspired by an episode of Farscape, one of my favorite science fiction television series.

Daily Divine

What if God was one us:
would you see the divine
in your daily life?

Just a slob like one us:
would you think less
because of the mess?

Just a stranger on a bus:
would you offer your seat
to rest weary feet?

Trying to make his way home:
seek out the divine
in every life.
